MDM a CSA Group Co. was part of the design team that successfully completed this award winning school. P.S. No. 31 is a project that we feel rather proud of. The engineering and architectural designs are very creative.

This new PreK-8 is a new three-story 123,000 SF building utilized by 725 students. This project required demolition of the existing building and renovation of the existing buildings adjacent to it on site.

The 60 classrooms, including small group instruction spaces, will overlook a protected play area. Site improvements include rubberized play surfaces, vehicular access to the site and parking, new sidewalks and landscaping, as well as site lighting. The project is intended to provide appropriate space for instructional areas, library, a cafetorium with stage, a gymnasium, athletic facilities, support programs, technology updates, parking and community activities.

MDM was responsible for providing MEP design and construction documents for the new facility. The design included a building code analysis, feasibility study and contract documents. The building was designed employing “Green” building principles that employ environmentally responsible design and construction practices were used such as passive and active solar energy, photovoltaic and geothermal heat pump systems, SMART START. Part of the design requirements for this building was to be LEED® certified. MDM also provided third-party commissioning services.

This school has been honored by the U.S. Department of Education with the Blue Ribbon Award naming it one of the best schools in America. P.S. No. 31 is one of only four schools in New Jersey and the only urban school district to win this award. This project also received the 2008 ACEC Design Excellence Award.
